So often, I find that couples are eager to speed through the engagement season and skip straight to the wedding day. But really, the engagement period is extraordinary in its own right. To borrow from Song of Solomon, it’s a declaration: “I have found the one whom my soul loves.” It’s a promise signifying the intention to fully intertwine two lives into one. Taking engagement photos in Ventura County is always a highlight of working with my Leslie Joy couples. It gives me an opportunity to create an intimate moment for them. And for them to reflect on all that has brought them to this point.

One of my favorite things to have my couples do is to take a second to completely ignore everything. Forget about me and my camera and anything else going on around them, and just focus on each other. I ask them to tell their fiance why they’ve decided they are the one person they want to spend their life with. It’s a chance to clear their minds of the endless wedding planning tasks. To remind themselves of why it’s all worth it.

I stay out of earshot and as unobtrusive as possible during these moments, to really allow my couples to be in the moment. But I know that Emma and Josh truly took this exercise to heart. You could tel by the way they were looking at each other. Their relationship up to this point has spanned nearly a decade. In these past 10 years they have gone from strangers to acquaintances, from first dates to moving in together. They’ve shared countless memories, and even ventured into puppy-parenthood (prepare yourself for the cuteness from Chewie’s cameo during our session).

They will officially celebrate 10 years together when they get married in an intimate ceremony at Pacific View Tower by Wedgewood Weddings. And I can’t wait to capture the beginning of yet another incredible season of their lives, their story together.

Passionate about turning your most heartfelt moments into your legacy of love

When I was first getting to know my husband, Michael's, family, I loved hearing the stories of their marriages— the good times and bad, better and worse, joy as well as sorrow, and always love. But the very first time I saw his grandmother’s collection of family wedding photos perched atop her mantel I had to stop and take in what over 200 years of marriage looked like on display. As I looked on at the images framed on the mantel, immediately all of the stories shared by Michael’s grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins came rushing through my head, and it was so easy to trace them all back to the days they said “I do.” In my role as a wedding photographer, I capture all of the raw emotions of your big day, so when you look back at those images you are reminded of the fullness in your heart and you can see how that first day of marriage created a legacy of love.
