Getting Married at the Unitarian Society Santa Barbara
If you’re looking for a wedding venue in Santa Barbara that feels quaint, timeless, and distinctly local, the Unitarian Society Santa Barbara (USSB) is worth putting on your list. Located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, this venue offers a beautiful blank canvas for couples who want to create a celebration that feels like their own.
It’s especially appealing if you love Santa Barbara’s architectural character and want to be close to downtown without committing to the experience or price tag of a large resort. The venue offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, giving you plenty of flexibility for an intimate ceremony, reception, or full wedding day.

Why Couples Love the Unitarian Society Santa Barbara
The USSB is a great fit for couples who want a simple, clean space where they can bring their own vision to life.
One of the biggest advantages is the location. You’re right in the middle of Santa Barbara, close to some beautiful portrait locations and downtown attractions, while the venue itself still feels private and tucked away.
A few things that stand out:
- Classic Santa Barbara architectural style
- A quaint, timeless atmosphere
- Indoor and outdoor event options
- A beautiful courtyard for an al fresco celebration
- The iconic clocktower
- Close proximity to downtown Santa Barbara
- An extensive preferred vendor list, including some all-inclusive planning options
The venue is connected to the Unitarian Society, so couples who are looking for a completely secular setting may want to consider whether that environment feels right for them. You aren’t required to have a specific religious celebration, but the venue’s connection to a religious community is worth knowing about before booking.

Ceremony options
The Sanctuary provides an indoor ceremony setting with wooden pews and stained-glass windows.
If you’d rather be outside, the La Paz Courtyard is another ceremony option.
Reception options
For an indoor reception, the Parish Hall offers a large event space with a stage at the front of the room.
For an outdoor celebration, the Parish Courtyard provides a beautiful setting for couples who want an al fresco reception. The courtyard arches also create some particularly nice opportunities for portraits.

Best Photo Spots at the Unitarian Society Santa Barbara
One of my favorite things about photographing here is that the venue may be compact, but it gives you more creative options than you might expect.
The Parish Courtyard is one of the obvious places to start. The arches create beautiful architectural framing and give you plenty of opportunities to play with composition.
But I’d also encourage couples to venture beyond the property.
Alice Keck Memorial Park is directly across the street, making it an easy addition to your portrait timeline. It’s a quick option when you want a change of scenery without having to build significant travel time into the day.
If you have a little extra time, the Santa Barbara Courthouse is less than a 15-minute walk away—about half a mile. It gives you another iconic Santa Barbara location and can add a completely different look to your wedding portraits.
This is one of those situations where stepping away from the reception for a short portrait adventure can be worthwhile. Your guests can continue enjoying the celebration while you get a little breathing room together — and you come back with portraits that don’t all look like they were taken in the same place.
Don’t overlook the Parish Hall for portraits
Even if you aren’t using the Parish Hall for your ceremony or reception, don’t write it off as simply an event space.
It can make a surprisingly fun backdrop for editorial portraits, particularly if you like a high-fashion or Hollywood-inspired aesthetic. This is a great example of why having a photographer who knows the space can be valuable. A room that’s designed for one purpose can sometimes become something completely different when you approach it creatively.

A note about light
If you’re using the Sanctuary or Parish Hall for part of your wedding day, be aware that the available light can be limited.
That isn’t necessarily a problem, but it’s something to consider when choosing your photographer. Someone who is comfortable working confidently in low-light situations will be able to make the most of these spaces.
The Best Season for a Unitarian Society Santa Barbara Wedding
If I were choosing a season for a wedding here, I’d embrace spring and summer.
One advantage of this venue compared with some of Santa Barbara’s more coastal wedding venues is that you’re not as affected by the area’s famous May Gray and June Gloom.
That makes spring and summer especially appealing if you’re hoping to take advantage of the outdoor spaces and nearby portrait locations. You get to lean into the Santa Barbara setting without being quite as dependent on perfect coastal conditions.
Things to Know Before You Book Unitarian Society Santa Barbara for Your Wedding
The USSB has an extensive list of preferred vendors, although you aren’t required to use vendors from that list.
They also offer a few all-inclusive options through preferred planners, which could be helpful if you want a more streamlined planning experience.
Parking is primarily street parking. It’s worth talking through your transportation and parking plans with your venue and planner ahead of time.
And don’t overlook the location when you’re building your timeline. Alice Keck Memorial Park is directly across the street and Santa Barbara Courthouse is only about half a mile away. These two provide excellent portrait options without needing to spend a large portion of your wedding day traveling.
From a Photographer’s Perspective
This is a venue where I’d encourage photographers to think outside the box.
The site is compact, so you don’t necessarily have endless spaces to move through. Instead, the fun comes from finding unexpected angles and using the architecture creatively.
There are opportunities for higher vantage points from the balcony in the Sanctuary. And the arches of the Parish Courtyard create beautiful compositions.
And don’t be afraid to look at the spaces differently than they’re intended to be used. The stage of the Parish Hall, for example, can become a great editorial portrait setting.
For couples, my biggest tip would be to build some time into your timeline to leave the venue for portraits. Alice Keck Memorial Park is an easy option directly across the street. The Santa Barbara Courthouse is close enough to walk to if you have a little more time.
A short portrait adventure can give you a change of scenery, a little time together away from the action, and a completely different set of photographs.
