If you’re dreaming of a Santa Barbara wedding with sweeping ocean views, Spanish-inspired architecture, and the ease of having your guests stay on property, the Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara is worth a closer look.
Located in Goleta just outside Santa Barbara, this luxury oceanfront resort sits on 74 acres and has everything you need to turn your wedding into a full weekend experience. With more than 350 guest rooms across 19 villas, couples can host large room blocks while keeping many of the celebrations, accommodations, and activities in one place.
From a photography perspective, the Bacara has the best of Santa Barbara built right into the property: beautiful architecture, ocean views, manicured lawns, and incredible sunset light.

Why Couples Love the Ritz-Carlton Bacara
The Bacara is especially well suited for couples who want a luxury resort wedding with a relaxed coastal feel.
The setting combines the quiet atmosphere of an oceanfront resort with the Spanish-inspired architecture that makes Santa Barbara so recognizable. And because the property is so expansive, there are plenty of different settings throughout the wedding weekend without having to leave the resort.
It can be a particularly good fit if you:
- Want ocean views to be part of your wedding-day experience
- Love Santa Barbara’s Spanish-inspired architecture
- Want guests to be able to stay on property
- Are planning a larger wedding or full wedding weekend
- Want both outdoor and indoor event options
- Like the idea of having multiple portrait locations throughout the property
One important consideration: this is a luxury resort, so it may not be the right fit for couples working with a tighter budget or those looking for a fully indoor wedding experience.
The Bacara hosts only one wedding per day, although other non-wedding events may take place elsewhere on the property. Couples who want complete privacy throughout the resort would need to consider a full resort buyout.

Best Photo Spots at Ritz-Carlton Bacara
The Bacara is one of those properties where you don’t have to go far to find beautiful backdrops.
Bluff Lawn
The Bluff Lawn is one of my favorite places for portraits. It has sweeping views and the kind of open coastal setting that immediately feels like Santa Barbara.
The lawn is also turf, which means it stays looking immaculate throughout the year. For larger celebrations, the Bluff Lawn can accommodate ceremonies of up to 250 guests, with cocktail hour often taking place on the back half of the lawn for an easy transition.
Spanish-Tile Staircases
Don’t overlook the Spanish-inspired architecture when planning portraits. The tile staircases offer a completely different look from the ocean views and are a great way to bring some of Santa Barbara’s architectural character into your gallery.
Sunset
If there is one piece of timeline advice I’d give couples getting married here, it’s this: leave time for sunset portraits.
Santa Barbara is known for its cotton-candy-colored sunsets, and the oceanfront setting at the Bacara gives you a beautiful opportunity to take advantage of that light.
Work with your planner and photographer to intentionally build sunset portraits into the timeline. It’s one of those decisions you probably won’t regret.

The Best Time of Year for Photos
Santa Barbara is beautiful year-round, but this property really shines in the late summer and early fall.
The Central Coast is prone to the familiar “May gray” and “June gloom” weather patterns. If having clear views of the Pacific is a priority for your wedding photography, July through October is generally the window I’d keep in mind.
Of course, weather can never be guaranteed, but couples who are especially excited about those sweeping ocean views may want to consider the time of year when choosing their wedding date.
A Note About Getting Ready Photos
The guest rooms can vary when it comes to natural light, and some rooms may feel a little dim for getting-ready photographs.
If photography is a priority, I like to make use of balconies and outdoor areas whenever possible. This gives you more natural light and can also provide a little breathing room from a busy getting-ready space.
If you’re staying on property, it can be worth talking with your photographer and planner ahead of time about where you’ll get ready and what the light is like in that particular room.
Wedding Ceremony and Reception Spaces at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara
The Bacara offers several options depending on your guest count and how you want your wedding day to flow.
Ocean Lawn
The Ocean Lawn is the property’s largest lawn space.
One particularly helpful detail for couples: during a ceremony, access to the lawn is blocked, so you don’t have to worry about hotel guests casually walking through your ceremony space.
The adjacent Village Hall also provides convenient access for vendors.
The Ocean Lawn is commonly used for welcome receptions the night before the wedding as well. For weddings using the lawn for the ceremony, the ballroom is often paired with it for the reception.
The ballroom can accommodate up to 450 guests and features 21-foot ceilings. Its curfew is 1:30 a.m.
Bluff Lawn
The Bluff Lawn can accommodate ceremonies of up to 250 guests and offers an easy transition into cocktail hour, which can be hosted on the back half of the lawn.
Because the lawn is turf, it maintains a polished appearance throughout the year.
Rotunda Terrace
The Rotunda Terrace can accommodate around 120 guests in its central area, with capacity increasing to approximately 200 when tables extend into the hallway.
There is a 10 p.m. curfew due to Santa Barbara city ordinance.
For couples who want to keep the party going, the adjoining indoor Rotunda space can be used for dancing. It features a built-in bar and has an 11 p.m. curfew.
Santa Ynez Room
The Santa Ynez Room can accommodate up to 130 guests and can work especially well for an after-party.
If it isn’t being used for a guest-facing event, the space can also serve as vendor space. It can also provide a rain backup option for events planned on the Rotunda Terrace.
O Bar
Located underneath the Rotunda, O Bar is a public space rather than a private wedding venue.
If you aren’t planning to host a formal after-party, it’s worth asking the Bacara whether the bar can remain open later for your guests. It can stay open until midnight.

Things to Know Before You Book
The property is big
The Bacara is a sprawling resort, and different parts of your wedding day may take place in different areas of the property.
That makes transportation and logistics worth thinking about early.
Ask whether golf cart transportation is available for key members of your wedding day, particularly the couple, planner, photographer, and wedding party.
This can save valuable time when you’re moving between getting ready, portraits, ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception locations.
Think about your room block strategically
If you’re hosting a room block at the resort, ask whether your guests can be placed in the same villa or in villas that are close together.
With 19 villas and more than 350 guest rooms, there is plenty of accommodation, but where those rooms are located can make a difference to the experience of your wedding weekend.
Vendors should plan for the hills
There are specific loading zones throughout the property, and vendors need to be aware of the designated access points.
The property also has hills, so vendors should plan their setup and transportation accordingly.
You’ll need a planner
The Bacara requires couples to work with a wedding planner, although the planner does not necessarily have to come from the venue’s preferred vendor list.
For a property this large, having someone coordinating the movement of people, vendors, and events can be especially helpful.

What a Wedding Day at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara Feels Like
One of the things I love about weddings at the Bacara is how relaxed they feel.
The staff on property do an excellent job of anticipating needs and living up to the Ritz-Carlton’s signature service. That level of attention gives couples the opportunity to be fully present and actually enjoy the memories they’re making, rather than constantly worrying about what needs to happen next.
And with sweeping views of the Pacific surrounding you, it’s hard not to feel at ease.
There’s something special about having a wedding that feels elevated and luxurious without feeling overly hectic. The combination of attentive service, the coastal setting, and the amount of space throughout the property creates an environment where the wedding weekend can feel like a true experience—not just a single event.

The Ritz-Carlton Bacara From a Photographer’s Perspective
What I love most about photographing at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara is that the property feels like the very best of Santa Barbara in one place.
You have the signature Ritz-Carlton luxury service, sweeping ocean views, Spanish-inspired architecture, manicured lawns, and beautiful portrait backdrops spread across 74 acres.
It also gives you variety.
You can photograph portraits against the ocean, move to the Spanish-tile staircases for something more architectural, and then take advantage of that famous Santa Barbara sunset later in the day.
My biggest photography tip for couples planning here is simple: protect time for sunset portraits. The property is beautiful all day, but that evening light is something I’d make room for in the timeline.
And because the resort is so large, I’d also build a little extra time into the schedule for moving between locations. A few extra minutes can make the day feel much less rushed.
Questions to Ask Before Booking
If you’re considering the Bacara, here are a few questions I’d bring to your venue and planning conversations:
- Which villas are best for keeping a wedding party or room block close together?
- Is golf cart transportation available for the couple, wedding party, planner, or photographer?
- Which ceremony locations work best for our guest count?
- What are the current curfews for the specific ceremony and reception spaces we’re considering?
- What is the rain backup plan for our preferred outdoor space?
- Which areas can vendors use for loading, setup, and storage?
- Are there restrictions on photography in any public areas of the resort?
- What getting-ready rooms or suites offer the best natural light?
- If we’re planning a welcome party or after-party, which spaces are available?
- If we’re hosting a room block, can guests be grouped into nearby villas?
