5 Tips For Picking Your Engagement Photo Outfits

It’s one of the most common questions I get after a couple has booked a session: what should we wear? I’m sharing my top five tips here to help take the guesswork out of selecting your engagement photo outfits.

Tip #1: Select clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable

There is a reason this is my number one tip! If an outfit has you feeling insecure, you’re bound to be focused on that during the session rather than being in the moment, and we don’t want that! Pick clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable, and that will allow you to really shine in your photos.

Tip #2: Get dressed up a little more than usual

This is such a special season in your lives, and it’s not every day that you have a professional photographer with you to capture your love story! Believe me when I say there is no such thing as being “too dressed up” for your engagement session! These are some of the heirloom images that will be on full-display in your home for years to come. Why not show off how well you clean up?

Tip #3: Be mindful of color choices

I love to recommend softer pastels or deep jewel tones when you select your engagement session outfits. These tend to have a more timeless feel that complements my shooting style well, and won’t cast any weird colors on your skin the way brighter colors sometimes do. It’s also important to focus on coordinating, instead of matching perfectly. Coordinated colors feel cohesive while still looking effortlessly put together. They also add more dimension to your images than if you were to both show up in head-to-toe matching colors. Need some inspiration? I love this color palette generator tool!

Tip #4: Consider the way it moves

Movement is another big component of my shooting style, so it’s nice to have an outfit that will lend itself to beautiful movement. For ladies, flowy skirts and dresses create beautiful movement that pairs perfectly with the airy style of my photography. Pro-tip: being able to play with a flowy skirt or dress also gives you something to do so you’ll never be left wondering, “What should I do with my hands?”

Tip #5: Let your location guide your footwear choices

This is more for a safety and comfort standpoint. Will your session be taking place in a field? You may want to forego the stilettos in favor of block heel to better navigate the uneven terrain. Taking your engagement photos at the beach? Consider going barefoot! It all goes back to tip #1: make sure you’re feeling comfortable! If you’re absolutely intent upon wearing a higher heel, it’s a great idea to bring along a pair of flats for the moments we’ll be walking between locations.
